The Fox is still in business today, one of only two pubs in Hermitage. Today, the inn sign depicts a fox rather than merely the name of the pub.
It now hangs in the Fox Talbot Museum. It was based on a daguerreotype by Antoine Claudet of 1845-46.
His story 'The Fox' was first published in 1923 and is set at Bailey Farm, which Lawrence based on Grimsbury Farm just outside the village.
On the right hand side is the premises of E G Fox & Son (Everard Gerald Fox), an off licence.
