Caption for Bristol, A View From The Centre Towards St Augustine's Reach C1950: A view from the Centre towards St Augustine's Reach. The Reach dates from the 13th century and used to extend further into the town. When it was built in 1248 it was an outstanding piece of civil engineering for its time, as it involved the diverting of the River Frome from its junction with the Avon at Bristol Bridge. The Reach established Bristol as the mahor port on the west coast.
