More about this scene
The broach spire of the church with its lancet windows and its tower were added to the original structure in 1870. Its position on a low hill, along with the needle spire, makes it a very prominent landmark for miles around, particularly when the structure is floodlit for special occasions. The function of the lychgate was to provide shelter for pallbearers awaiting the arrival of a funeral cortege. The wall on the extreme right of the photograph once marked the boundary of West Cheam Manor.
