We were an American family. My father was an airman stationed at Weather's Field and my first day of school was a walk down the hill from Stephens Close. Mrs. Gellespie was my first teacher. I moved here with my parents and brother back in 1969, my parents John & Joan were the first publicans in the new Standard Public House on the Parkway, we moved from Cambridge into this new and exciting phase of our lives, hardly a car parked anywhere along Queensway, doors were left unlocked and the norm was for us children to play outside all day, climbing trees and all that jazz, happy days. My mum and dad moved to haverhill when I was just 6mths old. I went to school at Burton End School. Ii remember there was many of us in that school - most of kids came from London. Then I went to Castle Middy School, which was so big from the little school down the road. The only school in Haverhill was The Cangle. The new secondary modern, now known as Castle Manor, had not yet been finished. We arrived at school very bewildered being the first of the Londoners and feeling like aliens. I made a new friend in the short while I had been in Haverhill.
