Nostalgic memories of Selsdon's local history

Share your own memories of Selsdon and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

Building on left (large brick wall) was the Button Factory, entry at the back, mum said. At the left at the end of shops used to be tea total cafe or diner where she used to hang out. Good bakers to right further down. Mum used to work in private shoe shop called Wholes when she was 16 to 17, in the 50's.
We moved to Selsdon in 1952 from Blackheath and I started primary school which was on the ground floor of the building in the picture. We lived at 4 Foxearth Road up until 1972 when my mother, who was widowed in 1962, moved to South Croydon. I left in 1970 for Italy where I have been ever since. I loved going to Littleheath Woods as a child to play, or to the library on a Saturday morning, which was situated, ...see more
We lived in Selsdon from 1948 to 1953 when we emmigrated to Canada. My name was Sally Easton then, we lived at 41 Byron Road my sister and I both walked to the school and I loved it there and was most unhappy about moving to Canada. I went to Brownies and the library on Purley Road. I do remember walking home through the woods behind the school and picking armfulls of bluebells in the spring. Some people I ...see more
We came to Selsdon in 53 from Kenley. We lived at 18 Foxearth Road. In 56 I started at Selsdon primary, junior and senior school until seniors closed in I think 66 when we all went to Riddlesdown school which was a very early comp style school. I remember the united dairy and of course Sid Kings where for 3d you got 1 cigarette and a swan vesta match. I remember Good Neighbours pub being built and I think Mr ...see more
My family and my father's before that (surname Kent) lived in Selsdon (84 and 32 Foxearth Road, 170 Littleheath Road, and 24 Benhurst Gardens) spanning c. 1930 - 1989. But at one point (after my father's death), my mother, my eldest sister and her 2 children, and myself all found ourselves 'between permanent homes', and therefore were renting the flat above the shop that was 'Car Sounds' around 1982. ...see more
My grandfather was a footman at Selsdon Park in 1919, when he married my grandmother. I would love to know more about Selsdon Park in the 1920s, but all I can find out is after it was turned into a golf course. Can anyone help me find out the history of  this lovely old house? Betty.
Forgive me if I've posted this before, but does anyone remember the Reid family from 113 Benhurst Gardens (that's me) or the Blounts that lived next door (I think) who went off to New Zealand. There was also Mrs. Warren around the corner (Elm Grove I think) who ran a nursery school which both my brother (Peter) and I attended.
I'm going back a long way and my memory is dim as I would be only five years old, but I THINK this could have been Selsdon Primary School at one time. Does anyone know? Susan Reid-Povall
