Nostalgic memories of Dagenham's local history

Share your own memories of Dagenham and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

I lived in Coombes Road, Dagenham and started school in 1950 at Arnold Road infants school. I have fond memories of Mrs Owen who taught history at this school. In 1952 my family moved to the prefabs in Goresbrook Road but I remained at Arnold Road Primary School until 1956. In 1956 I started at Goresbrook Secondary Modern school. I remember Mr Reece as the Headmaster. I enjoyed my childhood in Dagenham and have ...see more
I have a picture of myself and other children and neighbours at the 1951 Festival Sreet Party at Holgate Road Dagenham, and would love to know if others have memories of the get together. I only lived there a short time with my mother, father, uncle and cousin - the family name was Wells. I went to Alibon Road school and was looked after by Mrs Hutton in Pavet Close and Mrs Cronin in Standfield Road, ...see more
In the early 50's my aunt lived in the cottages next to The Merry Fiddlers pub. I can remember standing on a chair and looking out a back window to see wrestling contests. As to the Merry Fiddlers ....when I was a teenager in the 60's I used to go with other mod friends to dance to all the latest music. I can remember a local Group called 'Shaun Buckley and the Breadcrumbs'.....(the name always made me laugh)). Lots of happy memories.
My friend used to live in one of the small cottages on Nannygoats Common. I think there was a scrap metal merchant who also lived in same row, I think his name was Tiny Wakefield. Today flats and more flats dominate this area, the old junior school was pulled down to make way for 'progress'. I have happy memories of playing on the common, nowadays when passing through the area I look straight ahead, neither looking left nor right, I like to keep my happy memories intact!
Would this be the same church where my Dagenham ancestors were baptised, married and buried between 1850s & 1920s or was there an earlier church? Is the church graveyard still there or was it relocated? It's my dream to visit someday ... even if the village is no more (so sad). I have many family ties to the area up til WW1 (Warrens & Kendricks to name two).Donna Henley (nee Warren) Ontario, Canada
I used to go swimming at this pool with my school. The water temprature was shown as we entered and was often 36F. If it rained our weekly swimming lesson was cancelled. I never did learn to swim at this pool, as it took me most of my lesson getting used to the temperature of the water!
We were the first family to move into the new council house at number ten Alibon Gardens. My first school was Hunters Hall from where I was moved for a while To Albert Street school until Eastbrook buildings were completed. I remember standing in the playground at the opening of the school by Lord Halifax. My teacher was a dedicated Welshman named Richard Davis and I listened attentively to his every word. Many ...see more
My parents and I lived in a prefab in Gale Street, Dagenham in 1953. I was only six but have vivid memories of the Coronation. My father managed to obtain a TV and all my relatives from Wales came to visit. It was probably only about 12" (with a magnifier in front to make it seem larger). However, we still felt really fortunate to have one, as not many neighbours were so lucky. ...see more
I was christened in this lovely old church. My mum and dad were married there. It was such a lovely little village - good memories.
I have memories of Saturday morning pictures at the Grange as well. We lived in Joan Gardens and our Mum used to give us the money for a bus up to the Fiddlers. My sister used to make me sit on her lap so we saved the fare and used it for sweets. Innocent days!!
