From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

I remember Didsbury well. I was a young Telephonist who transferred from the big Telephone Exchange in Chapel Street Salford to Didsbury to get Manual experience. I was born @ 92, Inzievar Terrace, my Granny, Granda, & my aunt lived @ No. 84. Have wonderful memories (still do) of my childhood there. This half burnt out mansion and wonderful Japanese garden holds very special memories for me.Although it had notices saying it was private and to keep out,not to mention trespassers would be prosecuted,I couldn't keep away and would go there every chance I got.Despite the obvious dangers,I would make my way up to the roof and sit up there for hours listening to my tranny.It never really ...see more
I was born in Albertina road Treowen in 1940 and have some very good memories of Crumlin and Newbridge .They were good days but hard . My dad worked in The old Griagfawr pit . I left Crumlin in 1965 to work at Lucas Girling Cwmbran .I had a lot of good pals in Crumlin and will never forget them .
I was a young child with my Mother and sibling stranded at Romford Station on the night Harrison - Gibson burned down, after a visit to GrandMa because the power had also been turned off to the overhead power lines on the railway behind the store putting a stop to the electric trains. I lived at Willow Lane in the mid fifties and I was in the local hospital there which I think was called Hayton Hospital(but not sure of the spelling or area) Can anyone remember this please or where I could maybe find a photograph. I remember there was a large house across the road from us with a long pathway. The children used to say it was the old witch house and would dare each other to get the furthest up the path to the house.
Our family used to travel from London to a cottage called Redlon in Great Wratting for our childhood holidays during the 1950s. It was owned by the Cummings sisters and their mother. We looked after their Siamese cats and the spaniel called Bimmy while they were away. Wolseley Bridge has some memories for me going back to late 1968 and throughout 1969 as I was a pupil at St Bede’s School in nearby Bishton Hall. My mother was matron at the time and as we were mother and son (father died in 1964 and no brother or sister) our belongings were in store while we both resided at the school and at a nearby house during the school holidays. MY NAME IS BILL VANNER AND I WAS AT WARNHAM COURT WITH MY YOUNGER BROTHER MICK FOR TWO TERMS IN 1959 THEN ONE TERM IN 1961. I LEFT SCHOOL THEN BUT MY BROTHER RETURNED FOR ONE MORE TERM AND I WAS A LITTLE JEALOUS. I have very fond memories of summer holidays in my aunties cottage that is my grandmas sisterinlaws on adelaide road. Going to the open air swimming pool playing on the park the pub across the road from her house that sold icecream from a side window. O to have those times again so much I miss not least of all the people that are not here anymore they gave me so many memories.x
My brother (Nigel) and I were in Pinehurst in 1964. I left in 1967 and my bother remained there for three more years. At that time Maurice Goldsworthy was in charge with his wife Elsie and son Neil. I was born in Spencers Wood in 1944 , at South Lodge , Stanbury Park , opposite Mr Shermans butchers shop, I went to school at Lambs Lane and later at Ryeish Green , I remember going to the Co Op shop for sweets with a ration book, I spent a lot of time at the smiths which was just in The Square watching the horses having new shoes I think the smithy was mr Double , I played in the woods which were accross the ...see more

One of my strongest memories of the past in my Haydock is of War time. We had an air raid shelter just round from our house and we all used to pile into it when the air raid siren went off. I always remember Mr Martin who had been the local postman in Haydock, playing his piano accordion to cheer us all up. My twin sister and I were only about four, but I remember it so well. My Aunt, Lily Hewitt, owned a 19th century greengrocer's shop down on the left side of this view. She and her Husband Frank (who died in the 1940's) had run the shop from well before WWII, and went most days to Manchester Market for fresh produce. I was Born in Lon Gefn Bodedern and started school in the Village when I was 4 yrs old ,I have memories of the Head Master Mr Jones and his two daughters the youngest being Guinivere ? Used to get the weekend bread from Dunns the Bakers every Saturday morning.Thought nothing of joining the queue.Also Halls which was nearer to the clockon the broadway Crouch End. What lovely times they were.
Couldn't wait to go to school in Rokeseley Infants school so happy when the letter came.Remember sliding the letter under the tropical fish tank in our kitchen in Glasslyn Road.loved Infants school had a bit of a blip at the age of 7 my dad was ill and I had to go to a school in Hayling Island for 6 months hated it so did my brother Ed who was 3 years older than me.Got over it quickly when we got back went to ...see more
Anyone on this site ever worked at Ardingly during the above years. If so would you know of a James (Jock) Storey during this time. Anyone have any memories or know anyone who lived in the Bentswood Road area during the early 1950s. I was born in Haywards Heath in 1949 and Bentswood Road is on my birth certificate. Does anyone remember mickey price's barbers. It was on the corner of the main road through the heights and claremont ave. theres a garage there now. Short back and sides was the order of the day and just about every lad in the area had the scissor marks of mickey price's 'special'. I remember the austere yellow building as if it were yesterday. There I dreaded the school dentist who was, by modern standards, a butcher. Like Susan's account we also went to the swings after a visit to the dentist although at 10, I didnt care too much about the fun of it! On the green in Monton there it was a lovely green shed with forms in it so as a gang of girls and boys it was the ideal place for courting! My parents (Eirwen & Haydn Williams) moved to Aberbargoed from Gilfach to take over the newsagents in 1967 next to the New Duffryn pub when I was 11. Being a Bargoed lad I was very apprehensive about moving over to "the other side" and we lived above the shop for many years. My grandparents got married in this church in November 1911. Researching my family tree it is lovely to see the actual church where they got married.

Shute was a very strict English boarding school, which we were told was once the home of Lady Jane Grey, who was Queen of England for nine days, at which time she was beheaded. The long standing rumor was that on a full moon, you could she the ghost of Lady Jane Grey walk up the hill, infront of the school at midnight, carrying her head. I remember Marton Sec Mod Res (its posh title) better known as Marton Camp School. I left in 1964 and was in Coquet Dorm. My maiden name was Cardno then. It as the best 2 years of my life. In 1944, when I was six, bombs dropped at the end of our road in N. Mitcham (Caithness Road) rendering our home, and others, uninhabitable, and after spending one night at Woodland Way Community Hall we were transferred to the underground shelters on Figge's Marsh. My Mum and Dad ran the sweet shop at the bottom of Kentwood Hill from about 1957. 'J.E. Griffin, Bread, Cakes and Confectionery'. I went to The Highlands School until my Dad died in 1962. Then moved to Lawrence Road, off Norcot Hill and lived there for quite some years. Had a paper round out of the newsagents near the top of Norcot on the left.
My Grandparents ran the Alexandra Park Tavern before and during the second world war, they were Kath and Albert Allan. I was born in Nov. 1941 in Winchmore Hill and was taken back to live in the pub. In the 1960's I worked for Telephone Cables Limited or TCL as it was known, laying underground cables all over the UK. As one of the drivers I regularly had to go to the works to pick gear up. If my memory serves me right this view is taken looking back up Chequers Lane towards the Ford Works and that is TCL on the left with Dagenite batteries just beyond anf then an ungated railway crossing.
I was born in Backworth in 1937 and lived in a large house at the bottom of Percy St until about 1945, i can dimly recall the end of the war but in no great detail. I moved from Elmdon Heath, Solihull to a Grocers Shop in Heath Lane approx. 1953 with my parents, Sister & Brother. We used to walk down to the Park when we could. I lived in the old Shoulder of Mutton from about 1952 until 1964 while my parents were the tenants, they took over from my paternal grandparents. In the grounds of lido house there was an the remains of an old lido pool that my grandparents visited when younger. Next to the pool was a garden with an old sandstone fountain. I cannot find anything about an open air public pool existing possibly in the 1930s in Bramley. Can anyone help?

my husband believes he could have been in pinehurst he was only five his mum had turburculosis and his sister meningitis he can remember being taken by ambulance with his baby brother and has disribed the home to me with every little detail but cant remember the name of the home if any body has a photograph it would be lovely as he is terminally ill it would nice if we could solve this hope somebody can help kind regards marian howard

I was born in 1939. I knew a girl who lived on Harborne Park Road next to the gully. My brother and I used to catch the bus on Harborne Park Road to go to Bournville School. My mother used to buy rabbits to make rabbit stew from the butcher on Harborne Park Road. I lived at 41 Woodleigh Avenue until I was 11 years old when we left for Australia. The Old manor had a legend that highwayman Dick Turpin made an escape by taking the cellar tunnel under Church Road to the Hind's Head (the white building). I remember the Pleasauce well. I used to like going through the steppin stones. Further over there was a section which went a bit underground, it was all a big adventure for a child. We sometimes watched shows on the bandstand . Those were the days .
I had just finished adding an Article to somebody else's about Living in Penge. Just as I was about to close I spotted an article by a lady who had lived in Samos Road, Anerley, and who had also attended St Johns Primary School during the early 1950s. i attended Rosary Priory from 1959 until 1964. The nuns I fondly remember are Sisters Alphonsus , De Pazzi and Barbara. Mrs Simpson took us for PE when we wore grey culotte shorts for netball and navy knickers for gym. My friends during my time at the school were Susan Rothwell and Amanda Clark
I used to live in norwood green boundary close remember playing football and cricket on the green and playing in the public field near ron brewers donkey field people I remember peter tuck chris and mike ede and tony uff and mike uff be great to hear from any of these people .
I used to live in the little cottages at the bottom of Chequers Lane. 7 of us in a 2 up 2 down, outside loo - no bathroom. I grew up in Aldrington Rd in the flats 55 Shenstone Hse , I was born in 1959 and worked from the age of 13 till I was 16 as a Saturday boy in the co op butchers in mitcham lane (1972-1975) my boss was called Pete he lived in New Malden what a fantastic fella , he took me under his wing and gave me a chance , I then joined the Royal Navy and left London for good. My grandfather lived in Croydon from approximately 1960 to the end of 1964 (He died in January 1965.) Would anyone out there have met him?This is a long shot,I know. My Parents Herbert George Morris & Winifred Josephine Cheadle Married here on June 8th 1935. They were born & bred in Shifnal so were their parents. Grandparents were George & Harriet Morris , Jack ' also called James' Cheadle & Winifred Cheadle. They later on in the 1930s had to move to Wolverhampton where my Dad worked .
Perhaps the most important shop to a young man progressing through bikes, motor bikes, scooters, and finally a car, was Barnekells. This was opposite Hanwell Bus Garage. There is a picture of it with a trolley bus outside on the Nostalgic trolley bus site. I was born in Eresby Mews in 1948 in a flat above an old stable or coach house, my father Harry was born in the same mews in 1905. I used to work for DER tv rentals and most of the time worked right up to the Thames to fix tv's. I always wondered where all the lads went or ended up. I do remember Doris though, worked the 'phones, always had a fag dangling from one side of her mouth, so much so, she had a nicotine stained cheek! Used to call her 'dog-end-Doris', bless..
I went to this school from 1954-1957 ish. My elder sister attended too. I did not enjoy anything, at the school, even less the two weeks spent as a border when my parents went on holiday. There was one nun that I liked. But that was about it. I remember concrete footings for I assume an extension, that was never built. My granny and grandad ran the Post Office in Lower Willingdon from about 1948 - 1958. They were called Ernest and Ethel Brierley. Does anyone out there remember them? Thanks Angela Jennings
