Chalton Down Mill was a brick tower windmill located on a remote hill top overlooking the main London to Portsmouth road. It was powered by four patent shuttered sails and winded by a fantail.
On the right-hand corner with Dalton Road is Saxone Shoes, now Thomas Cook.
The corpora- tion started making plans to move out of the old town hall as early as 1898, and bought a site in Dalton Square.
A vast 450-acre greenfield site at Dalton was acquired for the construction of the new works.
These architects specialised in pub design, and quality shines through; similar quality can be seen at The Crown, an exuberant pub in Cricklewood Broadway, and The Rising Sun in Chalton Street, Euston.
