Cockermouth was granted its market charter in 1221, and gradually developed in importance until it was the chief commercial centre of the old county of Cumberland.
To a current inhabitant, the most striking feature of this view is the absence of houses in the centre.

Little can be usefully gleaned from the remains shown here, but it is known that Dorchester was a centre for a school of mosaicists in the 3rd and 4th centuries.
