Tattershall has lost its railway, but it still has its castle, and Tom Thumb's house is still on top of a house on the left of the market place.
The castle was rebuilt and the castellated front was added in 1818. Leasowe later became a convalescent home.
To the right, along the curving line of the castle bailey, are S Ball & Sons and the Midland Bank, which has been rebuilt. The Pharmacy in the distance has lost its parapet and urns.
During the 1530s, the rundown defences of Carlisle Castle were renovated in order to house the latest cannon technology; the Botchergate gateway was moved and the Citadel constructed in its place
Throughout the First Civil War, both town and castle were held by the Royalists, and as such was one of the last to surrender.
The first castle was built by Roger de Montgomery and his son, possibly on the site of a native Welsh fortification or fortified settlement.

However, the ruins of a 14th-century castle in Betchworth Park are seen even less; unfortunately there is no public access to them.
