Seen here are the Star, run by Rupert Darby in 1931, and beyond it the Mid Hants Supply Stores Ltd, grocer's and post office; across the road is Bentley Garage.
This is the main road that links Ironbridge with Coalbrookdale, the place where the Industrial Revolution really did start in 1709 when Abraham Darby I discovered a method of smelting iron
The most famous resident, however, was Abraham Darby, who lived here for a time after he arrived in the area. The building has recently been restored and is now a hotel.
Abraham Darby owned a brassworks in the city, but in order to beat off foreigh competition he needed to employ skilled Flemish workers; they would only come to Bristol if thery were allowed to worship
Looking at their family tree, one can see how the Gregs were connected to many other important inventors and industrialists of the time, including Josiah Wedgwood and the Darbies of Coalbrookdale
W Darby & Co, occupying the old St Mary's vicarage, is an electrical retailer. Next door is Woodbridge's, specialising in gentlemen's shoes. C W Morris on the right is a draper and ladies' outfitter.
