The company bought Parsonage Farm at Abbots Langley and Numbers Farm at Kings Langley in the 1900s, and the Ovaltine model farm was established at Langley in 1929.
Originally known as Langley House, this was the home of Robert Henty, brother of G A Henty and of Lord Kindersley, Director of the Bank of England.
The village had its own mill, Ascott Mill, at one time; Langley Mill, shown here, was outside the village, nudging the Shipton-under- Wychwood border - the River Evenlode marks the parish boundary.
When Frith's photographer visited Kings Langley in the 1890s, cattle wandered freely along the High Street; but by 1955, the motor car was firmly established as king of the road.
Langley Park is a pit village just off the road between Lanchester and Durham. The road to the left goes to Quebec and Cornsay Colliery.
Wander's Ovaltine Company had been a major employer in Kings and Abbots Langley, but its closure in the 1970s was a major blow to the twin communities.
The artists Stanhope Forbes and Walter Langley settled here in the 1880s to paint the harbour and its fishermen.
Famously the second-highest point in Essex (the highest being a patch of undistinguished woodland in the parish of Langley), Langdon Hills certainly impressed the traveller Arthur Young.

The structure dates from the 15th century and contains the tomb of Edmund de Langley, the first Duke of York, Earl of Cambridge and fifth son of Edward III.
Cavendish Road, which runs from Brighton Road east to Langley Park Road, is a good example of the earlier phases of suburban growth in Sutton.
The baker's delivery trap beyond stands outside Langler House.
