Motor traffic had yet to make its impact on the town centre, and the forage business run by John Page & Son on the left was still in demand along with its advertised supplies of pet foods.

Houses close to the sea are known to have existed from very early times, and were no doubt places of food and rest for all seafarers.
These days, the building houses McDonald's fast food restaurant, who gave the site a much-needed facelift.
The residents of Lake Rise sacrifice some degree of privacy and suffer the likelihood of swans raiding their gardens demanding food, but in return enjoy a unique view across the lake, gardens
Now 'The Inn at Whitewell', the place has a reputation for serving good food and was built towards the end of the 14th century as a manor house by Walter Urswyck, a Keeper in the Royal Forest.
It is now a house, though it had continued working until 1960, grinding wholemeal for a Chelmsford health-food company.
Newly built in red bricks is Coode, Shilson and Co's St Austell Bank (now National Westminster); it was commonly known as 'the red bank'.
Then comes the Co-op shop, later converted into a shop for a travel agent and a small food shop.
Today its is a popular establishment offering 3 real ales, food and accomodation. When this picture was taken it was rather run down, but a major refurbishment has improved it wonderfully.
On the opposite side of the road, Smugglers has signs offering teas and homemade cakes - no fast food yet.
Discipline was strict, which caused a revolt when some boys took food from the kitchen and barricaded themselves in, armed with pistols. Armed men were brought to force a way in.
In the photograph we can see Dent's, Pageant House, selling food and fancy goods; the other shop is a newsagent, stationer and tobacconist.
Many of the retailers in our photographs have disappeared to be replaced by fast food outlets, video rental stores and national chains.
There is also evidence on some sites that early man was beginning to supplement his diet of meat with plant foods, fish and shellfish.
