Caption For Larne, Town Hall, Cross Street 1900

The town was the first in Ulster to use electric street lighting; this lamp illuminates what was then the T-junction of Main Street and Cross Street. The public house is still in place.

Caption For Haverfordwest, Hill Street 1906

Formerly named `Hill of St Thomas`, or `Hill Street`, it runs from St Thomas` Green to Market Street. Note the `parked` cars to the left and the busy traffic!

Caption For Edinburgh, The City And Firth Of Forth C1950

A tramcar rattles over the junction of Frederick Street and Princes Street. Edinburgh was well served by its tramway system for 85 years; services came to an end in November 1956.

Caption For Chelmsford, Moulsham Street C1950

Moulsham Street has now been cut in two by the building of Parkway. It is a continuation of the High Street, which we see in C73044.

Caption For Bishop's Stortford, Potter Street C1950

Behind the Morris 8, Church Street turns to the left with Boots 'Cash Chemist' on the corner. Today Potter Street is one-way - the traffic in the photograph is facing in the wrong direction.

Caption For Manchester, King Street C1885

This view looks from the top of King Street down towards Cross Street. We can see that the street narrows towards the bottom.

Caption For Walton, The Village 1899

A workman pauses from his digging - most likely connected with the gas street-lamp - while the photographer captures this street scene on the outskirts of Felixstowe.

Caption For Bury St Edmunds, Churchgate 1929

When Abbot Anselm laid out his grid pattern for the streets of Bury St Edmunds, Churchgate Street was planned as the main thoroughfare, a ceremonial route to St Edmund's shrine.

Caption For Buxton, Spring Gardens 1923

Although there are shops in higher Buxton, on High Street and the Market Place, the major commercial centre is Spring Gardens in the lower town.

Caption For Redbourn, High Street C1965

It is a few years after No R87001 (above), and the High Street is still almost deserted - just a couple of cars but no pedestrians, despite the new-fangled zebra crossing.

Caption For Belfast, High Street 1897

Looking down the busy, bustling high street to the Albert Memorial clock tower. Horse-drawn trams vie with the carts for the road, whilst the street is busy with shoppers.

Caption For Southport, Lord Street 1913

Bathchairs were once a common sight on the streets of Southport. They could be hired by the hour from the likes of John White in Shakespeare Street, or from the hydropathic establishments.

Caption For Clitheroe, Castle Street 1921

Castle Street is Clitheroe's main shopping street. Shops here have been kept by the same families for years, and they still have a reputation for quality and service.

Market Street leads from Old Market Place behind the photographer to Upper Parliament Street, and is terminated by the Theatre Royal's 1865 stuccoed front with its six-columned portico.

It is here that the turnpike rejoins the Roman road called Watling Street.

Of all the buildings, only the house in the distance on the left, No 1 Ermine Street, survives. It reminds us that Buntingford High Street and Royston Road follow the line of the Roman Ermine Street.

Caption For St Ives, Bunkers Hill 1892

This street is now bedecked with flower baskets, but the splendidly cut granite blocks and steps of the houses still survive, as do the cobbles, or 'setts', of the street's surface.

Caption For Chester, Watergate 1888
