Highfield Road crosses to the right below the field. The trees behind St Paul's Church have gone today.
Highfields Lido was opened in the same year and continued in use until 1981. The Pavilion has now been demolished, to be replaced by the Lakeside Arts Centre.
In the background we can see the wooded escarpment of High Fields, which overlooks the pantile roofs of the village street.
Luckily, just below refreshments are to hand at the Cow and Calf Inn, formerly known as the Highfield.
On the left is a noticeboard and gate giving access to Highfields and the Middle sports field. Further on is the primary school, once the National School, demolished in 1974.
Horbury's Grammar School was in Highfield Road, where older pupils were provided with a smoking room.
