Caption For Lincoln, The Cathedral And Stonebow 1890

This marvellously atmospheric view along the High Street looks across towards Lincoln's great medieval minster church which dominates the city and the countryside for miles around – the beautiful central

Caption For Bournemouth, Pier Approach And West Cliff 1922

Here we have a fine view over the Winter Gardens, an indoor facility for tourists.

Caption For Skinningrove, The Cliffs C1955

The isolated village of Skinningrove lies behind the camera – it is a community used to hardships and exposed to fierce winter weather.

Caption For Aberdovey, From The Sands 1901

Many of the terraces would have been built by local speculators as lodgings for visitors - the mildness and salubriousness of the climate made the town popular as a winter residence.

Caption For Worcester, High Street C1950

The cars have been replaced with trees (complete with a huge wagtail roost in winter).

Caption For Bilsborrow, The White Bull C1955

The White Bull inn dates from the 18th century, and still believes in a roaring coal or log fire in winter.

Situated below Winter Hill on Rivington Moor, Adlington developed as a textile town before the advent of the railway because of its proximity to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, which runs

Caption For Loftus, Mill Bank C1960

Mill Bank, or simply 'Loftus Bank', forms the approach to Loftus from Carlin How and, to this day, tests the skills of even the most careful driver, particularly in the winter months.

Caption For Axminster, Trinity Square 1902

There was a minster here as early as 705. Well before that, the Roman Fosse Way threaded its way through the town. In later years stage coaches halted at the 18th-century George Inn.

The pointed roof on the other bank belongs to St Laurence's Church, Rowhedge, built in 1838 as a pastiche of York Minster's chapterhouse.

Caption For Bridport, West Street 1927

Lime trees (left) have been pruned into mop-head lollipops, confirming that this is a winter photo, which also explains the heavy clothing.

This nutrient-rich harvest would provide winter fodder for these hard-working draught animals and others in the months ahead.

Caption For Gisburn, The Church Of St Mary The Virgin 1921
