Here we see the main street, with a group of villagers watching the photographer in action. Their clothing is typical of the era.
During his lifetime Scott lived at several addresses in the city, the most famous being 39 Castle Street, where he wrote many of the Waverley novels.

We are looking down Penrith's main shopping street.
The Parade, seen here with North Street in the distance, is at the very heart of Taunton. On the left are the Victoria Rooms, built as a market in 1821 and sadly demolished in 1963.
Further down the street the petrol pumps have gone, but cars are still sold from the garage.
The High Street is a delightful mix of ancient buildings. The Butterwalk was built to provide traders with shelter from the elements as they sold their wares.
When this photograph was taken, there was not a lot more to Huntingdon than its long High Street, which leads off Market Hill in both directions, overlooked by the graceful spire of the now-lost Trnity
