Where I Work

The nave vault has more than 250 bosses, all richly and superbly carved.

Rising to 1433 feet, the boss of Kestor serves as a prominent landmark with its outlying granite rocky basin, as seen when approaching from Chagford.
It is over 17 feet high, and is beautifully carved with biblical scenes on one side and on the other the 'boss and serpent' design associated with pre-Christian pagan worship.

There is no minster at Yetminster, but it does offer a very attractive 15th century parish church, with some excellent brasses and carved roof bosses. Its bells are over 300 years old.

East Brent's church has a tall, slender spire, but its most remarkable feature is the nave ceiling of 1637 which has a sinuous pattern of imitation vault ribs focusing on three pendant bosses done
The latter has three spectacular aisles, one built for the ancient Clothworkers' Guild with a roof of finely-carved beams and bosses.
Inside there is a carved Agnus Dei boss on magnificently moulded ceiling beams - these show that the original building of c1500 was timber-framed and jettied.
The replacement incorporates salvaged fittings, including ceiling beams and an oak boss carved with a Tudor rose.
Inside there is a fine 14th-century king post roof with carved bosses. Very little remains of the palace except for two large fish ponds and the medieval bridge across the moat.
The carved faces on the walls have survived (some of them are comical), and the bosses in the vault and some pieces of original medieval glass remain.
Never fully completed, the west tower is 142ft 6ins high; the north porch has a groined roof with well-carved bosses. The nave has nine bays and a large triforium.
High on the panelled ceiling are bosses on which are carved the initials of Sir John's family.
The wonderful 500-year-old roof has heraldic bosses down the central beam. The chancel screen was dedicated on 10 October 1924, and was given by W Favill Tuke in memory of his wife.
