For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Hi, I lived in Hextable from about the age of 9 until I was 17, when I joined the WRAF. We lived in New Road and there was a nursery opposite where we lived and the road was UN made. Does anyone remember the orphanage at pallotti hall in the late 1960s/early 1970s?My wife was there as a very young child and would love to share your memories.
We lived in Hillingdon but I used to often visit Southall as a child as my father and uncle had shops in South Road. On Saturday my father and I used to arrive early morning then visit a cafe a few doors away with plasticised tables where we enjoyed hot drinks. I was born in 1946 and lived in Dongola rd until 1966 when I married . My name then was Pizzey I went to Downhills infants and junior school and then on to Belmont seniors. My name is Peter West and I started my life and spent the first 7 important years at the Oak. My dad was the landlord and and his father before him up until 1962 when he retired and I was whisked away in tears to go to our new home in Devon.I have such strong and fond memories of it all. I was curious to know if anyone remembered the school in the early 60s- I enjoyed my time at Rivington Road- remember the bluebells near the school and love them to this day. We had a trainee teacher who really inspired me - even now I remember making water clocks and dying fabric like they did in Roman times - I used onion skins and it turned the fabric yellow! Sad boat accident Monday morning 26th March 1877 at Ryton. There were two brothers named Scott who lived in a house on Ryton Island, this was just below Moor Court. (You can read about this in my other stories). The brothers had the Salmon Fisheries rights and along with this came the rights of the ferry boatman. I remember living on Coronation st from 1959 until they were pulled down in 1969, I attended the primary school at the top of Mill street,just a 5 minute walk from home. I had a wonderful childhood,playing football with my friends in the rec. or collecting birds eggs in the fields and woods around Culling Worth! My father worked at Chubbs factory around the late 50's and into the 60's. He lived with my Mum and two sisters opposite the factory. I am trying to trace anyone who may have known him working in the factory. He died in 1968. He was called Alan Hammond and my Mum was Gladys Sophia Hammond (formerly Smith). All of my relatives have passed away and I have been trying to find out about him and whether any photographs were taken of employees at the time. Michelle
I remember visiting Redbrook as a teenager. My cousin Peggy and Michael Alvis lived in Hillside Road I went to school with their eldest daughter Margaret. I was fascinated with this quant village and village life. I later visited family in Monmouth when I was On a Geography field trip in Hereford. I have tried and failed to find any info about the small private school I went to in 1959 to1961. It was called Park School and was on Holmefield ave cleveleys. I was Susan Cope back then and I think the headteacher was Mrs Neil.I was friends with Kathleen Gardner but lost touch with her a long time ago.I would love to hear from anyone from then
Sherry's was a milk, ice cream and coffee bar, as you say opposite the Odeon. My father and mother were the managers there in the 60's. My dad made the best milkshakes and ice cream sundaes. Many top bands appeared at the Odeon and used the bar before and after performances. There was an autograph book which was kept by the counter. My eldest sister still has it. In the Oaks Park in about 1958 I recall seeing a pile of rails and sleepers which appeared to have been from a narrow gauge railway. It was near the big house which was partly demolished by then. Does anyone remember a railway in the park?
I lived in Coulsdon from 1955 first in Woodcote Grove Road opposite Smitham school which I attended from 1958-1963. I remember the shops vividly from the United Dairies to Sainbury's with the wall tiles and the cheese cutter and butter pats. As a child in the mid sixties I remember that during the summer holidays my mother would take my sisters and myself for picnics occasionally in the walled garden that was at Langley Vale and also remember how we loved the peace and quiet within those walls. I went to school at St Johns Church of England School 1955-1961 - remember Hedleys butchers Ecobs chemist the wynott - and many of the 'kids' I went to school with - Elaine Salt, Kathryn Westley, Barbara Ward, Kathryn Banks, Una Kirkhan, John Kendal, Joseph Hedley, Robert Baker, and others very happy memories of the teachers too - Miss Powell, Mr Feast, Mr Smith, Mrs Beasley - my name was/is kathleen birch - do you remember anyone??
I moved to southall with my parents and a younger sister in the late 1950's. My parents immigrated from India and I was about 5-6 years old. Susan Williams was born at Malmesbury Hospital in 1949 to John and Shelagh. We lived with my Grandparents at Lea until were housed at Charlton Park. I went to Riverside School and played out in the sunny weather in the summer we had back then. This post I have just found fiddling around on my iPad. Hello I have no memory of Biggleswade but very interested because I was born there I lived in Stotfold and went to infant school there and used to visit Letchworth and Hitchin but left the area to go and live in Denham Bucks. I now live in Windsor have moved around quite a lot in my life
It was the late 1950's and we were travelling in a motorbike and sidecar. Mum and dad were on the bike and the two children (my brother and I) in the sidecar. We started to descend slowly down the hill, all wondering at the exciting views. All quiet, reflecting the concern of the parents.... Half way down and so good. Then, the penultimate bend. I was born in Hayling in 1948 and lived there until 1958. I lived in Westfield Ave and later Ilex Walk. My parents worked for Sir Arthur Sanders and his in laws Mr & Mrs Olivier (aunt & uncle of Sir Lawrence Olivier) Mr Olivier was a portrait artist in the war. I remember seeing The Walker Brothers 1964/65 at The Palace, it was chaotic they had to be pulled off stage I fell over and I couldn't get up I rember trying desperately and getting panicky then someone put out a hand and pulled me up I got to the back as quickly as possible very shaken, and saw the Walkers being hoisted off stage
I Remember going to East Acton infants ,john Perryn junior and then Bromyard avenue later to be faraday .We lived in a prefab in church field road Sundays was a treat walking up to tony brothers ice cream shop (bowl in hand) I also remember Doris ,little kiosk near the park and level crossing.we moved to East Acton lane (nearer school) on leaving I took an apprenticeship with hairdressers (jacques)happy times ...see more
I spent happy years at Hackbridge School 1949 to 1954. We had sports in the Grange Park I think. I lived at Mitcham Junction so it was a old penny bus fare or a walk, I seem to remember walking passed Watercress beds.

This photo brings back the memory of the High Street, I was born in 1946 in one of the houses in the picture, it was between the Horse and Groom pub and the telephone exchange. My gran lived in the house for so long they named it after her it was called Spong Cottage. My mother lived in Chobham all her life and was highly involved in the football club, her name was Daisy Walley. It was a happy time but we cannot turn the clock back.
I remember my days of playing on the large pips that lay on the grounds which is now a car park at the bottom of the Largs road does anyone else remember the pips that lay there.

Unfortunately I do not have memories of Kewstoke as my Mother was moved from the maternity home after I was 2 weeks old to Bognor Regis. I would like to know more about my birth place. For instance where the maternity home was , and possibly what it is now if it is still standing. Can anyone help with this please. Thank you.
I have wonderful childhood memories of staying with family friends during the school holidays in Gt. Wenham. Joyce and Goggy along with their daughters Reba who was about 6 and Hazel Jane who was still stilling up in her pram. They emigrated to Australia when I was still young and I never heard anything after that.
I was born in chattisham in 1955, my mother worked as a maid for Mrs Charrington (of charringtons breweries) at their big house, I have photos of us there when I was about 3yrs old. My dads family came from Hintlesham nearby. The Baker family
Saturday morning pictures at the cinema that we used to call the Flea Pit. I attended Holmshill school unitl I left in 1965. I remember playing games of hockey at Hillside school that we used to refer to as St. Trinians as we were lucky to escape there without too many injuries. Has anyone got any memories of the Arcade, especially the Barber's shop as I would be most interested to learn what happened to the owners.
I worked at the Beach Hotel in the early 1990s. I worked as the Restaurant manager ,the last one just before it closed . All so sad . It was supposed to be fully refurbished,but it all fell through. The Hotel was so busy, and popular , and loved so much . I remember the manager (Roy Edicar) saying that it more than payed its way. Very tired looking, but nobody seemed to mind . Used to go out with a chap (wont say his name) who lived in Knockholt, his dad was a GP there at the time....lovely...lived in a lovely house of the beaten track as I remember, with it's own driveway and lovely trees on both sides....beautiful place.....only went there the once, but has stayed in my memory.

I was about 5 when we moved here approximately 1943 from Perham Down. I went to the Garrison School in the Tidworth Barracks, with the American PX behind us. They chucked us kids sweets etc. - a luxury with sweets on the ration. There was a very old market next door to the front of the school and it was pulled down. Believe there were rats under the floor boardings. They sold food and had a shoe shop at one ...see more
lived in margate from approx. 1945 to 1952. There was a pier with a life boat station halfway up.Took a trip on the lifeboat, public once year, and was really seasick. There was also the Pavilion, close by was a 'pillbox' a wartime concrete structure meant to provide defence against invaders. As kids we would get into it and explore all kinds of things. Not sure what glyn.brian7 was seeing out the back of the Regent Cafe, but my mum and dad ran a cafe on weekends in Chipstead at the entrance to Banstead woods from the late 1940's until the early 60's and my dad was the only other person as best I know that Tony Capaldi allowed to sell his ice cream. TBB (tech block b) housed a large stores area in which I worked for about three years. I was on a two shift system earlies 0630hrs start and lates 1445hrs start. My dad started his first school here. Stenhouse primary. His name is Brian William scott. He lived in stenhouse with his mum,dad, 1 older sister Catherine and 1 younger brother Derek. TBA (tech block a) was a very large building so much so that people often got lost. There were four hangars East West North and South. In each hangar there was a technicl control and documents office which was reached by steps. There were two large lifts half way down the building with two smaller ones at the front. I remember Comet House, Speedbird House, and Technical Block A. Later they were linked together by a walkway above ground level. The board room was originally in TBA but when Speedbird House was built it was moved to there. Freight Revenue was in Comet House as was Catering and Cargo. I was a Brownie as a young girl and a very accomplished one too. I had an armful of Badges which had been ever so carefully sewn all the way down the sleeve of my uniform by my Mother. As a Brownie i took part in the Remembrance day service each year. I was born in Pontefract. Christened and Married, as were my parents, in All Saints Church in Pontefract by the Reverand Fawkes, now diseased. Happy wonderful memories of Bassaleg where i was born . My mother being from pentre poeth my father the nook in rogerstone . Went to bassaleg infants school merlin jones was headmaster scared the wits out of me but mrs lukker wasy fave teacher by far . I can remember when this was the main A31! Yes it is very difficult to imagine now that all the traffic from East to West came along this road as well as the traffic from West to East, that is both ways! Yes ALL the traffic as there was no by-pass in those days!! When the volume of vehicles increased, because the road was very narrow, the first shop on the right, after what was Rodways garage, was demolished. This was in the 1960's. Pauline Stevens.
I was travelling from Hounslow to Bristol on a Blue/Cream coach. No M4 to Bristol then only as far as Reading. We stopped at Maidenhead coach station. Next I remember Marlborough. I alighted and looking around saw the Polly Tearooms. Oh how welcome. I often go back and fondly recall those wonderful days of my youth. John Betjeman featured the Polly Tea Rooms in one of his films. They are timeless in this changing world!
I lived in Moreton Morrell for all of my early years. Fond memories of both Moreton Hall and Moreton Paddox. I remember American armed forces being at Moreton Paddox during the war years, especially the Christmas parties they put on for the local children. Lots of changes over the years, not always for the better.
I started school in September 1945 at Farnworth C of E School in Pit Lane. When I started school my dad worked at the Co Op as "first hand" in various shops in Widnes. Our headmaster was Mr. Turton and he was an excellent man! We had a very good primary education and I sat the 11 plus in the early months of 1951. It was a Sunday morning and I had taken a (red rover underground ticket) and travellved via Baker Street to Amersham. I walked through Parsonage Woods and as I came out of the woods was taken back by the wonderful vista of old Amersham. Could there be a finer view and available by underground any time. I descended and walked around for seversl hours. If paradise was lost, well I surely had found it in 1964!
I was born in Croydon in 1936, and lived In West Way, Shirley. My mother could not bear to part with us, so we lived at home all through the war. A bomb was dropped into the garden next door. After six months it was discovered it had not "gone off!" We were moved up the street while the Army defused it. We were told it was meant to be dropped on the docks. Next to the underground depot on the Boston Road was a litte shop called The Acorn. It sold sweetss etc. On the other side of the line where offices are now was Boston Bumps. This was a piece of waste land where we rode our track bikes which were painted black and white. We called ourselves the Zedbras. I remember Michelin pimple tyres were the order of the day. The streets around Boston Manor were more spacious and had bigger houses than Hanwell. Southdown Avenue was very grand. Going towards Elthorne Park I remember Mr Mitchell our geography teacher at Bordeston school lived. On the right Mrs Costick who was 7th Hanwell Cubs Akala lived. Running paralell with Southdown Avenue was Wyke Gardens which had about 15 prefabs down one side. They had a splendid view across ...see more
Catherine! I was also at pownall green and high field with mr Williams, mr allport and another female teacher, I cannot remember, but I rememb er mr fox for all the wrong reasons. I lived in moreton avenue off lumb lane in the same area was all the peach children, Wendy whitlow, at school my mates were Jill taboada, Pam Eastwood Irene tucker and Lynn jones. I have noticed a lack of memories of Boston Manor although it has a underground station and a sizeable population. I will start with the shops I remember in the 1950/60. Going towards Hanwell on the right hand side there was an estate agents. Next was Renee hairdressers. The International stores (a sort of little Sainsburys). Does anyone remember The Byron Northolt it used to have dances on Thursday and Sunday. I lived on the Lime Tree Estate, so it was only a 15 min walk away. They had some really good groups playing there. I also remember the bouncers, any trouble and they would throw you out. I used to go there about 1965. I was also born in the Woodlands in Colliers wood in 1944 and my sister in 1945.I went to Gorringe park Infants and Juniors school.
My grandma and granddad and my mum and dad, with me and my brother who was six years old then, and my baby sister spent two weeks in the summer of 66 - we was in Margate for two weeks. The weather was glorious and really warm we had travelled from Sheffield at 02:30am from Sheffield Victoria station to Manchester then from Manchester to London then from London to Margate. This photograph shows Grange Road, Barnton, I know because I lived there for 20 years. The car in the picture is either parked outside, or is being driven away from the front of our house. The car a Vauxhall Velox, belonged to my dad. Grange Road houses on the left, the terraced houses are Central Avenue
I like these old photos of this site in Chelwood Gate, which I believe is known as Isle of Thorns ?. I visited Chelwood Gate in 1998 whilst attending Downsview Primary, this was when England were playing Argentina at World Cup 98. I can still just about remember the sports hall and the sleeping room. Can also remember a swamp or pond that was nearby as well, unless I'm getting that mixed up with something else. I lived in Mill House as a young child in the late 1940s with my parents and grandparents. My Grandfather bought Mill House and the mortgage cost them £2.7.9 (2 pounds 7 shillings and 9pence a month over 21 years (I still have his mortgage book from the Ramsbury Building Society. Mill house is now valued at £1,000,000 + if only it had stayed in the family-thats life I suppose!
I have lived in Pontefract for most of my life. I was born in 1958. At the age of 3 to 4 years of age I lived with my parents and two younger sisters in a very large detached house on Southgate. It was directly opposite what is now the Dentists, near Stringers garage. Our house was next to what was I believe was a sweet factory. That building has now been renovated and sells carpets. In the summer of 1966, I (an American) was driving around the UK with a close English friend. In Wales, we found ourselves on a virtually impassable fog-covered road filled with sheep, and drove downhill at 1 mile per hour into the town of Blaengwynfi. I remember walking from St. Albans road to downshall and home for lunch. Horrible walk along that long road
I lived at no.3 Naccolt cottages 1940/45 and walked every day to Brook school and remember well the Ms Avery and Cooling , these were the best years of my childhood -- and learnt a lot too ! I was born in Basingstoke in 1942 at 17 Mortimer Lane, pulled down during the town redevelopment. I remember playing on the bomb site opposite St Michaels Church, now a remembrance garden.
