The best-known is the Zanzibar in Newport Road, opposite the Chetwynd Centre. It is on the site of the Top of the World, which was established immediately after the Second World War.

The reason for the name is that the front part of the inn is the new part - it was added onto the existing part in the 18th century.
The zig-zag roof now covers a swimming pool, and the displaced bar is in a new part of the extended building. To the right behind the car is the Miniature Zoo.
The coming of the railway in 1884 prompted the tasteful residential development of this new part of the village of Oxted, overlooking the Weald.
