The Cenotaph, the national war memorial and the heart of the Remembrance Day parade, is by Lutyens and dates from 1920.
This view pre-dates the Swinging Sixties, with echoes of a less materialist era: the Gothic-arched building on the right is the former Wesleyan Methodist Sunday School of 1903.
All four buildings in this view are Victorian: the one on the left, Birch Cottage, is of the 1860s, and the one behind the telephone pole, Jubilee Cottage, is dated 1887, while the others are of about
On the north side are the grounds of the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, which are mostly in Berkshire; but its Greek Doric gate lodges front London Road.
The date 1864 is carved at the back. The sculptor was Gibbs of Oxford.
On the right, No 57, the tall brick house beyond the lower houses in the foreground, is 16th-century and jettied, but it is dated 1732.
On the corner is The Laurels, a late Victorian bay-windowed villa dated 1897. Behind it is Beech Tree Court, houses formed out of old farmbuildings.
It was originally built as a chapel in the 12th century; the present commanding building on its hill overlooking the village mainly dates from the 15th century.
Kinmel Hall stands on a site said to date back to 1311, but this present country house emerged from the ashes of a former mansion destroyed by fire in 1848.
The street becomes East Road and was gated with a level crossing (in front of the thatched cottage) for the West Bay extension of the Bridport Railway, in use from 1884 to 1962.
Dating from 1712 and set in a landscaped park, it was built for the then Secretary to the Treasury, William Lowndes.
Much of the present building dates from Victorian reconstruction work commissioned by Rector William Quekett between 1858-62.
A plaque dated 22 August 1951 set into the wall of the garden of Corner House reads: 'This plaque was erected by the Sawbridgeworth Urban District to commemorate the transfer to the Council of the manorial
On the right is part of Tudor House - 'the best house in Uppingham', possibly dated circa 1600.
In 1891 a fire caused considerable damage to the fabric of the building, and the impression from the photograph is of a complete rebuilding soon after that date.
Smarden is an attractive Wealden village in H E Bates country, with a number of fine old timbered houses. At one time it had a substantial trade in linen and woollen goods.
To the left the Shopping Centre occupied the Victoria Palace Theatre; this was mainly used as a cinema, and by the date of this photograph had been stripped of its ornate stucco facings.
The first known reference to the chapel was found in a document of 1552, though the original structure probably dated back to the 14th century.
The church is built of a grey sandstone; the scraping of the interior has left it somewhat dull, but relieved by the royal arms dated 1684 above the chancel arch.
Removal of the ivy enables us to admire the late 18th-century house (with a painter in action, left) and next door, a Georgian façade conceals a timber-framed house dated to 1454-55.
No parking restrictions were in place at this date, and the Market Place served as the bus station. Car ownership was still a minority activity, despite the number of cars we can see here.
This castellated building dating from 1877 was designed for Henry Lowther, 3rd Earl of Lonsdale to guard the entrance to the drive up to Lowther Castle.
The hall, parts of which date from 1550, has been re-built and added to over the years.
Behind is the Town Hall, built by Weymouth architect George Crickmay for George Burt in 1882, which incorporates the 1670- dated facade of Mercers' Hall.
