Captions

2,179 captions found. Showing results 769 to 792.

Caption For Dublin, St Stephen's Green, The Lake And The College 1897

It was designed by Edward Parke in 1806 and completed in 1829.

Caption For Petworth, Saddlers Row 1906

Times change, and the lane to the left leads to Petworth's main car park.

Caption For Leeds, Roundhay Park Boat Station 1897

In 1891 the first experiments in England using overhead wiring for electric trams took place on the Roundhay Park route.

Caption For Bridport, South Street C1965

Bridport is best explored on foot, so park the car and wander around.

Caption For Little Budworth, St Peter's Church C1960

It can, however, be very noisy here at times - the parish is now also home to the Oulton Park motor racing circuit.

Caption For Dunster, The Nunnery C1955

When this picture was taken it had become dilapidated, and the central cottage was soon afterwards restored by the National Park Authority.

Caption For Watton, High Street C1950

The attempt to impose parking on one side of the street on alternate days has long since been abandoned in favour of time limits.

Caption For Bedford, Suspension Bridge 1921

The suspension bridge and park to the right are virtually unchanged, and you can usually see boaters out on the water.

Caption For Barnstaple, Rock Park 1935

The thatched bandstand was not built when the Park was opened, but was added as part of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

Caption For Epsom, Woodcote Park 1917

Woodcote Park was commandeered by the War Office in 1915, and Humphreys of Knightsbridge were contracted to build not only huts but also a chapel and a splendid recreation room.

Caption For Prestbury, Deep Street C1960

Prestbury Park, home to the famous National Hunt Gold Cup meeting each March, is nearby.

Caption For Measham, Magna Motors C1965

Behind is the car park for the cars to come under the hammer, and the fully mechanised tuning, repairing, and testing service of Magna Motors.

Caption For Wallasey, Chalets, Harrison Drive C1965

Seaside chalets have formed an integral part of British seaside holidays for well over a hundred years.

Caption For Astwood Bank, The Park C1965

The park seems to have been popular then, but is less so today. Maybe the constant traffic on neighbouring Evesham Road puts people off.

Caption For Littleham, Sandy Bay Beach C1960

The few scattered caravans on the cliff top mark the site of what has now become a vast 'caravanopolis' with hundreds of caravans, a car park, a restaurant and a shop.

Caption For London, Marble Arch C1915

In 1908 Marble Arch lost the neighbouring neighbourhood building, and the ground was cleared as far as Park Lane to the left. It was on an island site, but this had not yet become a roundabout.

Caption For Basildon, Ghyllgrove C1960

The south-west corner of the proposed Gloucester Park was therefore set aside for the Ghyllgrove neighbourhood.

Caption For Exmouth, The Boating Lake C1955

Caption For Castleford, Valley Gardens C1965

The much larger Queen's Park (1897) gives splendid views right over the town.

Caption For Colchester, The Castle 1891

This view was taken before the grounds opened as a public park, and it shows not only the high ground level around the keep but also the poor state of the stonework.

Caption For Chipping Norton, Market Street C1945

The Ford 8 van parked opposite this shop has white- painted mudguards; this testifies to a wartime need for it to be seen by fellow motorists and pedestrians during the blackout.

Caption For Monsal Dale, Monsal Head Hotel C1955

The Monsal Head Hotel is a landmark around these parts. After the railway closed, the National Park bought the track bed in 1980 and created the eight-mile-long Monsal Trail.
