Construction of St John's Priory was begun about 1075-76 when the Bishop of Lichfield, Peter de Leia, transferred the seat of his diocese to Chester.
In medieval times St John's was a cluster of timber-framed houses round the church, and a busy junction on the roads to Malvern, Hereford and Leominster.
The interior of St Peter's has piers and dressings of polyphant stone and a marble pulpit with alabaster steps.
