For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Remember the council putting all the snow on the green. Cricket pitch opposite. After school from Westage we would play in the tunnels made by the snow. Then home to Moreton Way past the park on the left.
I used to have a hair cut at the bowling alley, when I could afford it. If not it was Smiths on bath Road.# Went to Westgate school. Mr. Rackstaw? Mr. Good?? Terry Davies? I think we moved to Farnham Common in about 1967, my parents took over the family shops "Martin's Broadway Stores" we lived above the shops to start with, in a flat that was heated with green house paraffin heaters. was it 1968 that it snowed heavily ? Hi Susan the huts were located the side of the swimming pool and Barking Abey school thy previously been erected to house the soldiers who manned the guns the huts more level with the swimming pool and the guns in front up towards longbridge road. Like Wayne,I also transferred from St.Stephens to Lodge Farm in 1957.I loved my time there,my Father was Chief Clarke in the T.A. and we lived in a lovely house attached to the Drill Hall in Easemore Road.my name then was Catherine Allen I also remember enjoying a strawberry milk shake in De Greys cafe on Saturday morning.
My dad, Stanley Morgan Lloyd, was a pupil at this school.
And there he is...the policeman on point duty. We had a van that Charlie would deliver the bread in from our bakery in Regents St. I would sit on a wooden box in the passenger place next to the driver (there was no seat! One day, Charlie took his hands off the wheel and guided the van past the policeman with his knees.....very daring!
I was brought up in Rugby 1949 - 1970. My parents owned Tudor Bakeries at 3 Regent Street. At first we lived above the shop with the bake-house in Oxford Street. Then we moved to Bloxam Gardens off Bilton Road and converted the two floors above the shop into the bakery. I have many happy memories - one being the policeman on point duty just along from the clock tower. I'll have to look up the names of the roads at the junction but I can remember Sheep Street and High St being up the road.
i graham armstrong used to holiday in craster every year with my brother kevin, father john armstrong during late 1950's and early 60's. we all stayed at the sweet shop called nelsons on the harbour. many a good time was had by all!
The year was about 1950/51 I also worked in Sainsburys I had been working in Upton Park in Ray's bridal shop and had to go to Sainsburys for my mum ,one of my school friendsShirley Barbara Smith was working there and said why don't I go and work there. One of my earliest recollections is sitting on a bar stool in the Lord Roberts pub in Ashford, Kent in 1956/1957. Together with her husband (George), my grandmother (Gertrude Volans) ran the pub, which accounts for why at such a young age I was ‘parked’ at the bar. 60+ years later, I still remember the smell of beer. In 1951 to 1959 I I lived at Colliers Arms wingate with my grandmother Mary Elizabeth Merricks (she had lived there a long time) and my mother Ivy Piper also sister Christine piper. I was probably about 8 years old when this photo was taken, and I can clearly remember spending many summer days at the lido with my friends. I was talking to my granddaughter who is now 8 yrs old but living in Singapore, and so or chat was on Skype. The thing that really annoyed me about ST. Paul's Cray when it was first built and we moved there early 1949 was that there were no shops!! Long walk to ST Mary Cray high Street! The first thing that was built were PUBS!! The partridge in chipper field road. The wanderer at the top of my road Ravensbury. The crayfish near silver dale road. The Robin hood out side At. Moved to Orchard Road South Ockendon from the east End (Canning Town) in 69 went to Mardyke school, still remember good memories about that school, can remember going down to the Mardyke river, there was a very shallow part near the bridge, this was when you could go down Buckles Lane and walk through the old army barracks and not cross a road until you got to North Stifford. I was born in Godmersham in 1952 and lived here until 1972 when I got married .We lived in Eggerton lane at the far end . My Father worked for Godmersham Park estate and was head Gardener when he died in 1984 My mother worked at Eggerton Manor . My Mum met my Dad in Slough Trading Estate! He was a German prisoner of war and she befriended him! He went back to East Germany just before I was born in 1948. She didn't want to go with him. I met him once in East Berlin when I was 30!
Just to the left on the photo was a very small Tesco supermarket, it looked cheap and nasty and we avoided going in there at all costs. How things have changed! In the parade of shops on the left was a trendy gents clothes shop, Crosby's, I think. I know I spent a great deal of my hard earned cash in there. I remember Downside Estate, Morecombe Road (I think it was Road) very well as one of my best friends Pauline lived there and we used to go down to The Greyhound pub, High Street South, on Saturday nights. She used to have some fun parties too. I haven't thought about those in years.

I was born in 1944 and in July 1945 my father, Roland Broome (Roly) took over the tenancy of the Cannon Inn. I remember a very happy childhood with lots of friends. We spent a lot of time outdoors in all weathers.I especially remember playing Cowboys and Indians around the village with up to a dozen of us vying to play the most famous filmstar Cowboys or their just as famous horses. I remember going into the Jenny Lind the day Prince Andrew was born, the 19th Feb 1960. I had swelling in my Neck left from mumps and had radium treatment. I was on the Gannon Ward and can also remember the side ward which seemed like a glass conservatory. The nurses were lovely and they had a lovely playroom and dolls house. I too remember the green walls and pink toothpaste that tasted lovely.
My family moved from Hackney East London to Dulverton Road Harold Hill in 1951 to 1962. I started my school days in Straight Road school, followed by Bosworth, then London Road school in Romford. I’m trying to find out some info on the mental home my auntie was placed there as a child we are lead to believe this was due to complications at birth. She died in the home in 1976 of chocking at the age of 40. I’m wondering who holds the records of her and her life in here as I’ve read it was pretty grim.

In the early 1950s I worked at the Central Library, near St Mary's Church. My most vivid memories are the long working hours (difficult for the social life of a young girl) and having to manually count the 'issue' before we could go home. My father bought the pig farm known as Woodley in Selsdon Vale in 1951. I was four. I attended Selsdon Primary school until I was eleven when I moved to Riddlesdown. I really treasure my childhood memories as I had so much fun. During school holidays I would go out with my dad in his lorry to collect the pigswill from hotels, hospitals, etc. From all the articles I've read about Selsdon no one ever mentions Selsdon Vale. what can i say that has not already been said about that place,i was there from 1963 till 1968 in softly house.i cant think of a single day i was happy there,the staff were absolute monsters,and the biggest monster of all was the headmaster a horrible sadistic little man that would beat the children for no reason whatsoever,some of the things i witnessed that man do would beggar belief these days.men have complained about ...see more
I remember Waitrose from my childhood, every Saturday afternoon I would come here with my parents to do the weekly shop. Then nip over to George Orts for some of their lovely pastries. Little did I realise that I would end up in the bakery trade. Down by the clock there was a large Boots Chemist to the right. There were quite a few shops in The Quadrant but I can not remember many of them.
We moved to Watford in 1943. My war time memories are of night after night in the shelters, the "doodle bugs" and the boys playing Germans and soldiers on the bomb site next door. Lived in Retford Road Harol Hill from 1950 to 1972 name was Margaret Gatrell. Went to Mead infants /juniors then to Harrowfield secondary school. My first teacher at Meads was called Mrs Fenton. Anybody remember the Eton Manor Sports Ground? Now absorbed into the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. I lived there from 1955 to 1959. But was associated with it for 30 years. Wonderful memories!!
As Pulborough lad of 1950's vintage I remember The Chequers well as Impasses it every day on my way to catch the train taking me and many others to School (The Weald)in Billings Hurst. I was born in 1970 and have lived in Maidstone all my life. When I was much younger I remember you could drive along Sandling Road and see soldiers carrying weapons, guarding the entrance to the Royal Engineers Invicta Barracks. This was before the dual carriageway was built and the entrance to the barracks was moved. You can no longer see the entrance when you drive by. ...see more
Does anybody know when the infant block closed, the name of the Catholic school that took place? About 1962/3? I remember it having a reputation in sorting out troublesome children, the discipline was super strict.
I went to Sunny Hill primary school left in 1960 then went to Parkside in Brixton. Lived in Coventry Hall Polworth Road when it was the old convent turned into flats.
I have many memories of lydd some not so great I was brought up in the old police station opp the rising sun just on the right as you go over the bridge of the miniature steam railway. Yes, I always shopped here ,as I only lived just up the road on barn hill. I was newly married in 1958 and lived there until1968 .Now live in Wales!! So many memories , as this part of London was my life. Worked in Mayfair for a long time, next door to the Dorchester. This is what happens when one is an octogenarian.

Hello My mother recently died, my mum was 83 years. Mum was a cadet nurse in walton hospital from 1950 to 1953 approx. Then mum did her SRN training qualifying on the 29/03/1956. My family moved to Broadstairs in 1965 when I was nine years old. I left at the age of 23 years after getting married. I have so many memories but one I cannot ratify and would love to know if anyone can confirm it for me. I have a memory of a replica viking ship being displayed for a time on top of the building at the end of the jetty but can find no evidence of it. I attended the radio college in John Dalton street, Manchester, and was very lucky to be given accommodation in Lincoln Street, with a Sid Donlan. That 12 months was probably the happiest in my life. I spent all my free time with Sid, the scout group, and youth club, where I met with some great people - all very kind. In September 1940 I lived in Meadway and witnessed a Hurricane fighter crash in the Purley Boys Grammar School playing field. The pilot, an Ace pilot of the Battle of Britain was known as Caesar and he died that day and I went up to view the site. At the time I was attending the Purley Girls Grammar School. I remember Carole Day across the road and we used to play together, also Francis Warrender around the corner on Coverdale Street. I am trying to find out the name of the Paper Manufacturing Company that had a big works on the Edgeware Road which was there in late 1930's but probably after the bombing moved nearer London as it was I believe owned by my Grandfather but we can not find out what the company name was. Hi I was born at Chester Nursing Home - 11 Stanley Place, Chester in April 1943. I am wondering what happened to the Nursing Home and if anyone can give me a some history and photograph of the building it was situated in, I left the UK in 1965 for Canada but each time I go home I visit Chester. I lived in Valentines Way Rush Green in 1940’s, as I remember it was a cu-de sac with fields opposite, with my parents , sister Shirley and brother John, I did not go to local school, was at St Mary’s RC in Hornchurch then Romford College so only friend was my next door neighbor Henen, I also remember a sweet shop in Rush Green, sweets on ration so only went on Saturday.
My father in law grew up in Cornwall in the 1920's he was Desmond Rowe and had a sister born 1923 called Cynthia Joan Rowe, his mother was Maud Mary Rowe and they lived in No 1 New Row in Treskillard, I have been researching the family now for 20 years and have lots of information but sadly no photo's, does anyone remember them or are there relatives that would be willing to talk to me. my late father was a driver with green line buses in romford, and the greenline families association would send their children to california in england as we knew it for day trips on the railway that ran through the woods ,as well as the large vessel on the lake that took us round what to us then seemed a huge lake , as well as the amusements , i didn't know about it's demise , but i am pleased to see that in name it still survives
The little shop was owned by my father Ernie Garnett. He worked long hours with just half day closing for a few hours on a Wednesday and then back for the Leicester Mercury to be delivered.
I am trying to learn if the evacuees from London (abt. 40-60 children) came to Felsted in 1939 and some stayed at The Hole Farm (previously recorded as Nunn's Farm) when it was two cottages (today one house). Did any stay at the Mill, which other house or Farm or did some children stay at The Glitch of Bacon Pub etc? I understand the children were educated at Crix Mission Hall by Miss Stephenson despite the lack of books and limited paper. Any stories will be most appreciated.

I worked on the Croydon Advertiser from about 1959 to 1963 and met my wife Frances Dowsett, who was also a reporter there at the office in High Street. We used to lunch most days at Batty's Bar, upstairs in a pub on the corner of George Street opposite the Advertiser. Worked on the 5th/6th floor of Central House for several years in the late 60s /early 70s for the Inland Revenue. The 7th floor was occupied by Commercial Union Insurance Company and the 3rd and 4th floors by Bradford Council. The building was largely glass and single glazed leading it to be far too hot in summer and too cold in winter. If you opened the windows it was very noisy from the traffic ...see more
Mrs Minnie Wraight was my grandmotherf. When we were bombed out of our house in Deal in 1942, we stayed with her and my Grandfather, Walter Wraight, for a while then moved next door into the Old Bakery, where Teddy Weston was the baker. We stayed here until the end of the war when we were eventually able to return to our refurbished home in Deal where my father and uncle ran a taxi firm. My Grandmother was ...see more
I used to ride my cycle from Blacksmiths Lane in South Hornchurch to fish in Berwick Ponds in late 50's and early 60's. I have good memories of sitting on the bank on many a Sunday listening to "Round the Horn", "Billy Cotton's Band Show" and "Hancock's Half Hour" playing on my little battery transistor radio, drinking hot Bovril from my flask and dipping my cheese sandwiches in - ugh! Was a patient for six weeks in summer of 1966. World cup celebration times (England won it that year) and sunshine though I was sad then. An amazing mix of patients; from young people (including me) to professional people, business and pilots. Met some very pleasant female patients there also. Spent two holidays in Tenby around 1955/6 mornings spent on the beach. Afternoon spent exploring usually by bus. No car then. We came down from Cheshire on the train. The journey being part of the holiday. Stayed in board and lodging at Gibraltar Terrace. Think the landlady was Swiss. She made my sister and I a beautiful rabbit jelly complete with jelly grass. I went to Stanhope castle from 1975 to 1977. I do understand that there was a lot of physical abuse that happened. It happened to me too. I am trying to get to the truth about Stanhope castle. a lot has been covered up which I am trying to uncover. hi, as a child I lived in the prefabs on Rye Hill Park, now flats. I remember the Rossi ice cream horse and cart that used to stop at the bottom of the hill and lemon ice was my favourite. The park was our playground and my brother fell in the stream on numerous occasions, much to my mum’s horror. We had a white westie called Snowy who used to chase the postman. I attended Hounslow Heath Infants and then HH Primary School in the fifties. Mr Such was our headmaster and I remember Mr Gilbert as my class teacher who also ran the school soccer team, of which I was a member. I also played for Heston & Isleworth and Middlesex as a junior whilst attending HHPS. I was a football tragic! I don't remember much about my classmates. My memory and the memory of my 2 sisters was horrendous, it was like consentration camp. They would force you to eat dinners you did not like and if you didn't eat it you would be made to sit all night on the floor no covers nothing. My Great Grandmother had two brothers who lived in Newington or Walworth, South London. This would be the area between Camberwell and Kennington to the South and The Elephant and Castle and The Borough, Southwark to the North. Hi, my name was Christine Sanderson and I lived in Rydal Ave from1963. Before that on Pembertons Bank. My dad Jack Sanderson, was passionate about the village, and wrote 10 local history books about Easington Lane. He also had dozens of photographs. There is now a display of photographs in ELCAP, ( old Welfare) in the Brickgarth. Well worth a visit.
I lived in Gardenia road as a child and my father used to go here on a Thursday night as they had some sort of gun club. a relic from the war I think. They also always had a fish stall on a Sunday Lunch time . Winkles and shrimps. I also had a Saturday job in the snack bar in the pool one Summer I couldn’t have been very old, I was there with the Webb girls from Leighton Road. How the time has flown.
