Recent Memories

Reconnecting with our shared local history.

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

My uncle John Cossey was the Blacksmith from the 1930s to the 1980s. When he retired nobody else took over the shop. It has stood empty ever since. When I came out from the primary school, which is on the opposite side of the road, each afternoon; I would stand in his yard watching him shoeing horses or making things like wrought iron gates. He died in Alpington nursing home about 10 years ago.
I was born in Dagenham 1950, but moved to Blundell Road, Burnt Oak in 1955. I attended Goldbeaters from 1955 to 1966 and can remember many of the people and teachers with whom I studied. Some of the teachers were really quite sadistic with their punishment regimes and I remember numerous incidents when punishment was over the top and didn't fit the crime. However, we survived and learnt from it. Some of my ...see more
