From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

I was born in Addlestone down good old greenlane . I attend st pauls school until I left in 1969. I used to hang around crown cafe alot , there was never alot todo at night disco at the com center which always ended up with a fight .as I live in Woking moved far haven't I .I have seen many changes dukes head,magnet and Woburn hotel all pulled down for houses and the police station now gone also the co op now replaced ...see more
Opposite Deans Gardens was a little 2nd hand electrical and record shop. It was about two shops down from Drayton Green Road. Previously it had been on the other side of the road opposite the Wimpy Bar. There were second hand records both 45rpm and 33 1/3 rpm. This was my main interest. Where Leeland Terrace comes out by Deans Gardens there used to be a public toilets before Leeland Terrace was extended. Next to this was a shop called Retlaws. It is now a Pizza shop. However in those far off days Retlaws reigned supreme as a toy shop. Down the side was a little path in front of a long window. I can still sing this old school song and remember the school motto "Nothing but the Best" inLatin of course. I still have those rolled up group photos but also my badge from my blazer, Thanks for the memory.
Woolworths for a small boy had a certain fascination, well for me it did. Firstly I remember being bought a tin plate trolley bus by my mum. It was Empire made. There were the arms on the roof just like the real one we had come on from Hanwell. Next the peanuts, they were in a sort of chrome box with a light bulb over them, so they were warm. At the juction of Leeland Road and Leeland Terrace was the Jackaranda Coffee Bar. Around the late fifties this was the place to be. Unfortunately I was too young to go in. I used to ride from Hanwell on my bike and look at it in wonder. I can remember thinking that there were things to look forward to. The music, the clothes. Somehow there seemed so much optimismn around.
My Dad was in the Canadian army and was posted to London when I was 7 years old . We lived in the top flat at 27 Chartfield Avenue . What a magical place ! The back yard was huge, with apple, pear and cherry trees to climb and a massive grassy area to run . We were an international neighbourhood. I remember the school trip to the Isle of Wight May 19th to June 2nd 1961. I still have my notes and scarp book. I had a really great time and went back 2 years ago to have another look. The isle of Wight still lovely. I met up in 1973 with either Pat or Linda Long who worked in the child care at Charing Cross & Fulham Hospital when my father was there.

My grandparents lived in this village, or rather in the lanes round about it. The Tyndale Monument, which we referred to simply as 'The Monument', was accessible only on foot, and in those days was all sealed up as it was considered dangerous. I remember M & S very well in West Ealing. Around the fifties they had St Michael toys. One I remember was a milk float, it had little crates with bottles in them. It was made of polythene as a lot of toys were then. Also they had an electric train set made by Rovex in Margate. They went on to become Triang. As a teenager I bought shirts there. F W Rowse was a department store on the Uxbridge Road. I remember on the ground floor you passed the furniture until you reached the toys at the back. On the right was material and patterns. I remember going with my mum and watching her buy material. There were big tables which had a sort of meter on where the material was unrolled and the assistant ran it through the meter to measure the length. There were also drawers of ...see more
Hi, I am researching my fathers family tree and in 1939 it shows their address as being The Old Shop, Kington. The names are Arthur John Deakins, Martha Jane Deakins (my grandparents) and Thomas George Deakins (my father who would have been 13 yrs old then). Hi, I was born in 1946 at the South London Hospital for Women and lived for a while at 15 Etruria St. Battersea, it was near Dogs Home Bridge and Battersea Power Station, where my dad, Charlie Jones worked. I was born at 50 Milling Street in 1955. I had my Auntie and Uncle living a few doors down. I was one of 6 kids so there were 8 of us crammed into our upstairs flat. The toilet was outside and downstairs in the backyard, while the tin bath hung on the wall outside!! How life has changed for young families today in 2017. I spent ten years of my life at the Holmeliegh from 1939-1949. I was known to everyone there, children & staff as BUNNY and I can honestly say that although things where hard I was never mistreated in any way. I used to enjoy a visit to Strawberry Fields. I remember you could buy a little pack of five CD singles for a £1.00. They were in a sealed bag so you got a surprise. The last CD I bought was by Mike and the Mechanics. I always enjoyed my visit.
My Dad, Mark Schofield went to Goodall Rd School from about 1947 - 51. He remembers having a school photo taken during this time and we would love to find a copy. If anyone can help, please let me know thanks, Jane
My Harrison ancestors all came from Cambridgeshire, mostly from the Downham, where they were agricultural laborers and my father, Victor Alfred George Harrison was born in 1914 in Peterborough. I worked as a consultant engineer in Ireland in the early nineteen ninety's staying in the Carrickdale hotel in Dromad, just over the border, as my base in the South whilst working in Newry. I also traveled further south to visit factories in the group situated between Newry and Dublin using a fleet car provided by Glen Electric Company based in Newry. I was ten years old when I was enrolled at Glenhow prep school. My parents worked in Kenya and thought it would be a good idea to send their son to boarding school instead of being with all my friends in Kenya. I was expelled at the age of 13 and moved on to Lindisfarne College in Wales. I loved Saltburn, it holds some happy memories for me. The head master at that time was Mr Rayson who I think moved on to somewhere in York. Are there any boy's that went to Glenhow at that time.
I used to work at Heathrow and after early shift I sometimes made my way in my mini van to the aquadrome. I would hire a metal rowing boat and row and just drift. How wonderful was that. This was around 1970. Afterwards I would walk around the lake and perhaps go to the Swiss Coffee House.
Hello Anyone remember John Burgess the butcher? He lived on Nashville St then Branson St. I can't find any record of his shop but he ran it during the war. He was my grandfather. Thanks
I started my orthopaedic training at Lord Mayor Treloars in 1950 a two year training. Have just found this site very interesting brought back lots of memories.
Whilst I will be visiting Milverton before too long, I have no personal memories as yet. I have however found a letter written by my birth mother on 21st Nov 1956 her address was Milverton Somerset. Her name was Margaret Elizabeth Williams and she was a State Registered Nurse working as a live-in private nurse in the South West at that time. The shop on the right wasa newsagents called Wrights, there was a greengrocer'so on the opposite side of the street which was a family business called Hammonds
Hi, I lived in Hextable from about the age of 9 until I was 17, when I joined the WRAF. We lived in New Road and there was a nursery opposite where we lived and the road was UN made. There was also an agricultural college in College Road. The school was not there, the site of the school was what we knew as the avenue with a lot of trees where we would walk the dog. We lived in Hillingdon but I used to often visit Southall as a child as my father and uncle had shops in South Road. I was born in 1946 and lived in Dongola rd until 1966 when I married . My name then was Pizzey I went to Downhills infants and junior school and then on to Belmont seniors. My name is Peter West and I started my life and spent the first 7 important years at the Oak. I was curious to know if anyone remembered the school in the early 60s- I enjoyed my time at Rivington Road- remember the bluebells near the school and love them to this day. We had a trainee teacher who really inspired me - even now I remember making water clocks and dying fabric like they did in Roman times - I used onion skins and it turned the fabric yellow! Sad boat accident Monday morning 26th March 1877 at Ryton. There were two brothers named Scott who lived in a house on Ryton Island, this was just below Moor Court. (You can read about this in my other stories). The brothers had the Salmon Fisheries rights and along with this came the rights of the ferry boatman. I remember living on Coronation st from 1959 until they were pulled down in 1969, I attended the primary school at the top of Mill street,just a 5 minute walk from home. I had a wonderful childhood,playing football with my friends in the rec. or collecting birds eggs in the fields and woods around Culling Worth! My father worked at Chubbs factory around the late 50's and into the 60's. He lived with my Mum and two sisters opposite the factory. I am trying to trace anyone who may have known him working in the factory. He died in 1968. He was called Alan Hammond and my Mum was Gladys Sophia Hammond (formerly Smith). All of my relatives have passed away and I have been trying to find out about him and whether any photographs were taken of employees at the time. Michelle
I remember visiting Redbrook as a teenager. My cousin Peggy and Michael Alvis lived in Hillside Road I went to school with their eldest daughter Margaret. I was fascinated with this quant village and village life. I later visited family in Monmouth when I was On a Geography field trip in Hereford. Sherry's was a milk, ice cream and coffee bar, as you say opposite the Odeon. My father and mother were the managers there in the 60's. My dad made the best milkshakes and ice cream sundaes. Many top bands appeared at the Odeon and used the bar before and after performances. There was an autograph book which was kept by the counter. My eldest sister still has it. In the Oaks Park in about 1958 I recall seeing a pile of rails and sleepers which appeared to have been from a narrow gauge railway. It was near the big house which was partly demolished by then. Does anyone remember a railway in the park?
I lived in Coulsdon from 1955 first in Woodcote Grove Road opposite Smitham school which I attended from 1958-1963. I remember the shops vividly from the United Dairies to Sainbury's with the wall tiles and the cheese cutter and butter pats. As a child in the mid sixties I remember that during the summer holidays my mother would take my sisters and myself for picnics occasionally in the walled garden that was at Langley Vale and also remember how we loved the peace and quiet within those walls. I went to school at St Johns Church of England School 1955-1961 - remember Hedleys butchers Ecobs chemist the wynott - and many of the 'kids' I went to school with - Elaine Salt, Kathryn Westley, Barbara Ward, Kathryn Banks, Una Kirkhan, John Kendal, Joseph Hedley, Robert Baker, and others very happy memories of the teachers too - Miss Powell, Mr Feast, Mr Smith, Mrs Beasley - my name was/is kathleen birch - do you remember anyone??
I moved to southall with my parents and a younger sister in the late 1950's. My parents immigrated from India and I was about 5-6 years old. Susan Williams was born at Malmesbury Hospital in 1949 to John and Shelagh. We lived with my Grandparents at Lea until were housed at Charlton Park. Hello I have no memory of Biggleswade but very interested because I was born there I lived in Stotfold and went to infant school there and used to visit Letchworth and Hitchin but left the area to go and live in Denham Bucks. I now live in Windsor have moved around quite a lot in my life

I was born in Hayling in 1948 and lived there until 1958. I lived in Westfield Ave and later Ilex Walk. My parents worked for Sir Arthur Sanders and his in laws Mr & Mrs Olivier (aunt & uncle of Sir Lawrence Olivier) Mr Olivier was a portrait artist in the war. I remember seeing The Walker Brothers 1964/65 at The Palace, it was chaotic they had to be pulled off stage I fell over and I couldn't get up I rember trying desperately and getting panicky then someone put out a hand and pulled me up I got to the back as quickly as possible very shaken, and saw the Walkers being hoisted off stage

I spent happy years at Hackbridge School 1949 to 1954. We had sports in the Grange Park I think. I lived at Mitcham Junction so it was a old penny bus fare or a walk, I seem to remember walking passed Watercress beds.

This photo brings back the memory of the High Street, I was born in 1946 in one of the houses in the picture, it was between the Horse and Groom pub and the telephone exchange. My gran lived in the house for so long they named it after her it was called Spong Cottage. My mother lived in Chobham all her life and was highly involved in the football club, her name was Daisy Walley. It was a happy time but we cannot turn the clock back.
I remember my days of playing on the large pips that lay on the grounds which is now a car park at the bottom of the Largs road does anyone else remember the pips that lay there.

Unfortunately I do not have memories of Kewstoke as my Mother was moved from the maternity home after I was 2 weeks old to Bognor Regis. I would like to know more about my birth place. For instance where the maternity home was , and possibly what it is now if it is still standing. Can anyone help with this please. Thank you.
I have wonderful childhood memories of staying with family friends during the school holidays in Gt. Wenham. Joyce and Goggy along with their daughters Reba who was about 6 and Hazel Jane who was still stilling up in her pram. They emigrated to Australia when I was still young and I never heard anything after that.
I was born in chattisham in 1955, my mother worked as a maid for Mrs Charrington (of charringtons breweries) at their big house, I have photos of us there when I was about 3yrs old. My dads family came from Hintlesham nearby. The Baker family
Saturday morning pictures at the cinema that we used to call the Flea Pit. I attended Holmshill school unitl I left in 1965. I remember playing games of hockey at Hillside school that we used to refer to as St. Trinians as we were lucky to escape there without too many injuries. Has anyone got any memories of the Arcade, especially the Barber's shop as I would be most interested to learn what happened to the owners.
I worked at the Beach Hotel in the early 1990s. I worked as the Restaurant manager ,the last one just before it closed . All so sad . It was supposed to be fully refurbished,but it all fell through. The Hotel was so busy, and popular , and loved so much . I remember the manager (Roy Edicar) saying that it more than payed its way. Very tired looking, but nobody seemed to mind . Used to go out with a chap (wont say his name) who lived in Knockholt, his dad was a GP there at the time....lovely...lived in a lovely house of the beaten track as I remember, with it's own driveway and lovely trees on both sides....beautiful place.....only went there the once, but has stayed in my memory.

I was about 5 when we moved here approximately 1943 from Perham Down. I went to the Garrison School in the Tidworth Barracks, with the American PX behind us. They chucked us kids sweets etc. - a luxury with sweets on the ration. There was a very old market next door to the front of the school and it was pulled down. Believe there were rats under the floor boardings. They sold food and had a shoe shop at one ...see more
lived in margate from approx. 1945 to 1952. There was a pier with a life boat station halfway up.Took a trip on the lifeboat, public once year, and was really seasick. There was also the Pavilion, close by was a 'pillbox' a wartime concrete structure meant to provide defence against invaders. As kids we would get into it and explore all kinds of things. Not sure what glyn.brian7 was seeing out the back of the Regent Cafe, but my mum and dad ran a cafe on weekends in Chipstead at the entrance to Banstead woods from the late 1940's until the early 60's and my dad was the only other person as best I know that Tony Capaldi allowed to sell his ice cream. TBB (tech block b) housed a large stores area in which I worked for about three years. I was on a two shift system earlies 0630hrs start and lates 1445hrs start. My memories of Wallasey go back to 1945. I went to St George's road school. Mr Sykes was the headmaster. I remember Barry West Valerie Windsor Jennifer Dean and many more.
